"intro": "Becoming a Dutch national by naturalisation is decided by the IND, but you submit the application in person at your municipality (gemeente), which checks your documents and forwards a file with its advice. The conditions cover your residence history, civic integration, conduct and, for many people, giving up your current nationality. A separate and much cheaper route, the option procedure (optieprocedure), exists for specific groups defined in law, so check that first.",
"before_you_start": "You must be 18 or older to apply for yourself, and you need valid documents proving your identity and your nationality. You also need permitted residence at the moment you apply, throughout the procedure and at the ceremony, so a permit that expires mid-procedure has to be extended. The residence term is not the same for everyone: the standard is 5 consecutive years in the Kingdom of the Netherlands with a valid residence permit, but partners of Dutch nationals, stateless people, former Dutch nationals and people with a long earlier residence history fall under shorter terms or none at all. If you belong to one of the groups named in the option procedure, that route is faster and costs far less, and applying for naturalisation instead would waste money.",
"timing": "You pay at the municipality when you submit, and the 12-month statutory decision period starts once the fee is paid. The IND states it can extend that period if the decision takes longer. After a positive decision the case goes to the King for a Royal Decree, and you must then attend the naturalisation ceremony within 1 year. The option procedure is far shorter: the municipality decides within 13 weeks, extendable once by a maximum of 13 weeks.",

Two years applies if you have 2 continuous years now and had already accumulated 10 years or more in the Kingdom. "detail": "The IND lists situations in which no residence term in the Kingdom is required. That section is written for people who do not live in the Kingdom, and the IND adds that these grounds also apply if you do live here. They are: you are married to or the registered partner of a Dutch national and you have lived together for at least 3 years, wherever that was; you previously held Dutch nationality and lost it; you were adopted in the Kingdom as an adult and at least one adoptive parent held Dutch nationality at the time of the adoption; or you are Moluccan under the Act on the position of Moluccans of 9 September 1976, in which case the fee is nil. Being born in the Netherlands is not on this list. If you were born in the Kingdom and have always lived in the Kingdom, the option procedure is the route to check, and it is a different procedure."
