## Summary

Plan journeys, choose between OVpay, OV-pas and an existing OV-chipkaart, check in and out correctly, change operators, compare subscriptions and fix a missed check-out.

## Overview

Dutch public transport uses one check-in and check-out system across trains, buses, trams and metros, but the payment options are in transition. OVpay lets many travellers use a contactless payment card or the new OV-pas, while some subscriptions and travel products still use the OV-chipkaart. This guide shows the practical workflow without assuming that one card or subscription is right for everyone.

## Before you start

Know the journey you want to make and whether you already have a subscription, student travel product or personal OV-chipkaart. If you are travelling occasionally without a discount product, a contactless payment card may be enough. If you already use a subscription or student travel product, do not replace the card it is on until the provider or current switch guidance says your product can move.

## Which payment route fits your situation?

Start with what you already use and whether a subscription or travel product is attached to it. The system is migrating, so the safest route is not the same for everyone.

- **You travel occasionally without a subscription** OVpay lets you check in and out with a contactless debit card, credit card, phone or smartwatch. You do not need to buy a separate travel card just to make an ordinary journey.
- **You want a separate public-transport card** The OV-pas is the successor to the OV-chipkaart and can be used across train, bus, tram and metro. Check current compatibility before moving any subscription or travel product to it.
- **You already have an NS subscription or another travel product** Keep using the card your product currently requires until the provider tells you how to migrate it. Not every subscription and travel product has moved to OVpay yet.
- **You use the DUO student travel product** Follow DUO's current student-travel route. DUO currently requires a personal OV-chipkaart for the student travel product and says it cannot yet be moved to OVpay.

## Steps

### 1. Plan the journey and identify the operators

Use 9292 to plan the complete trip across train, bus, tram and metro. Check which operators appear on the route, because that decides which card readers, product rules and disruption information matter later.

**Do this:** Plan the trip in 9292, note each operator and check the route again shortly before you leave if timing or disruption matters.

**Timing:** Do this before the journey, especially when it includes a transfer or an unfamiliar operator.

> **Common mistake:** Do not assume every train is NS or every transfer uses the same operator. The operator name matters when you check out, check in again or correct a journey.

### 2. Choose how you will pay

OVpay lets many travellers check in and out with a contactless debit card, credit card, phone or smartwatch, or with the OV-pas. The OV-pas is the successor to the OV-chipkaart. Existing OV-chipkaarts still matter for some subscriptions and travel products during the transition.

**Do this:** Choose one payment route for this journey. If a subscription or travel product is involved, check current compatibility before moving away from the card it already uses.

**Documents needed:**
- The payment card or travel card you plan to use
- Your subscription or travel-product details, if applicable

**Timing:** Choose before the first check-in so you do not change credentials halfway through the trip.

> **Common mistake:** Do not assume every subscription or discount works on every OVpay credential yet. Check the current switch guidance or the operator that issued the product.

### 3. Check in with the credential you intend to use

At the start of the journey, hold the chosen OV-chipkaart, OV-pas, contactless payment card or phone against the correct reader and wait for confirmation that you are checked in. Keep using that same credential for the matching check-out.

**Do this:** Take the intended card out of your wallet or phone case, check in once and confirm the reader accepted it before you travel.

**Documents needed:**
- Your chosen travel credential

**Timing:** Immediately before boarding, or at the station gate before entering the paid area.

> **Common mistake:** Avoid card clash. Present one credential to the reader and do not switch between a physical payment card and a digital wallet version of that card during the same journey.

### 4. Check out and change operators correctly

Check out when the journey ends. If you transfer to a different operator, check out from the first operator and check in with the next one. When you change between trains of the same operator, you normally stay checked in.

**Do this:** At a transfer, read the operator name on the gate or card reader. Check out and back in only when the operator changes or the route requires it.

**Timing:** At the end of each paid journey and whenever you change to another operator.

> **Common mistake:** Do not follow the colour of a gate alone. At stations served by more than one train operator, use the reader for the operator you are leaving or joining.

### 5. Compare subscriptions only after you know your travel pattern

A season ticket is not automatically cheaper. The useful comparison starts with the trips you repeat, the operators you use, your age or region where relevant, how often you travel and whether your journeys fall in peak or off-peak periods.

**Do this:** Use the 9292 season-ticket guide to shortlist products from your real travel pattern, then confirm current terms with the operator before buying.

**Documents needed:**
- A few weeks of expected or actual recurring journeys
- The operators and regions you use most

**Timing:** Compare after you can describe the journeys you expect to repeat, not just because you have arrived.

> **Common mistake:** Do not rely on a generic 'best subscription'. Products, prices and eligibility differ by operator, region and travel pattern and can change.

### 6. Keep subscriptions and student travel on the card they still require

The move from OV-chipkaart to OVpay is still product-specific. Current transition guidance says travellers with an NS subscription or student travel product may still need the OV-chipkaart, while other products can move at different times.

**Do this:** Before replacing an OV-chipkaart that carries a subscription or travel product, use the current OVpay switch guidance and the provider's own instructions. If you use the DUO student travel product, follow DUO's current student-travel route.

**Documents needed:**
- Your current OV-chipkaart
- The name of the subscription or travel product on it

**Timing:** Check before ordering a replacement or trying to move an existing product.

> **Common mistake:** Do not cancel, discard or replace the card carrying your travel product until its provider confirms the migration route that applies to you.

### 7. Correct a missed check-in or check-out

A forgotten check-out can result in a standard amount instead of the correct fare. The correction route depends on what you travelled with: OVpay has its own correction route, OV-chipkaart journeys can use Uitcheckgemist or the operator route, and some subscription journeys are corrected directly with the operator.

**Do this:** Open the journey history for the credential you used, find the incomplete journey and use the correction route shown by OVpay, Uitcheckgemist or the operator.

**Documents needed:**
- The date and approximate time of the journey
- The station or stop where you started and ended
- The credential used for the journey

**Timing:** Correct the journey once it appears in the relevant travel history instead of leaving the standard charge unresolved.

> **Common mistake:** Do not guess which operator handled the trip when correcting it. Use the journey details and the credential you actually checked in with.

## Documents

- The payment card, OV-pas or OV-chipkaart you intend to travel with
- Your subscription or student travel details, if you have them
- A phone with your journey plan or ticket if you use one

## Timing

Choose the payment method before the first journey, then check the route again shortly before leaving when disruption or an operator change could affect the trip.

## Common mistakes

- Checking in with one credential and trying to check out with another. Treat a physical bank card, the same card in a phone wallet and a separate OV-pas as different credentials.
- Forgetting to check out, or changing to another operator without checking out from the first operator and in with the next one.
- Assuming a subscription is automatically cheaper. Whether it helps depends on how often, where and when you travel and which operators you use.
- Replacing an OV-chipkaart before the subscription or travel product on it is ready to move. The OVpay transition is still product-specific.
- Holding a wallet or phone with several contactless cards against the reader and accidentally checking in with the wrong one.
- Treating a standard charge after a missed check-out as the final fare instead of using the correction route for the payment method and operator.

## Next steps

- Save 9292 for whole-journey planning and the relevant operator app or site for product-specific rules.
- Use the same travel credential from check-in to check-out, and look at the operator name when changing trains or other transport.
- After a few weeks of repeated travel, compare your real pattern with available subscriptions instead of choosing one before you know how you travel.
- If you miss a check-in or check-out, correct the journey through OVpay, Uitcheckgemist or the operator route that applies to your credential.
