For someone outside astronomy, the part that is open to the public is the Wireless Data Lab, a test facility for entrepreneurs and small businesses working on wireless products in the northern Netherlands.
About
ASTRON, the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy, is a national research institute that is part of NWO, the Dutch national research council. It is based in Dwingeloo with a second site in Zwiggelte, and it operates the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and the Low Frequency Array, known as LOFAR. It develops technology for radio telescopes, including receivers and antenna systems, and states its mission as making discoveries in radio astronomy happen through technology development, facility operation and fundamental research. It maintains protection zones around its telescopes to limit radio interference, and it is linked to international collaborations including JIVE and the European VLBI Network. Separately, ASTRON runs the Wireless Data Lab, a regional testbed funded by the provinces of Fryslan, Groningen and Drenthe together with EU regional development funds. There, starting entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized businesses developing wireless products can use test infrastructure such as EMC and antenna test chambers, and get technical help preparing for production, without having to buy their own measurement equipment.
