At Home in Groningen is a joint information website presented by the University of Groningen, Hanze University of Applied Sciences, the university medical centre, the municipality and the province, under a shared city label. It does not list properties and provides no accommodation itself. Instead it explains how the Groningen housing market works: where to look for a room or a house, whether through private landlords, housing corporations or estate agents; the local room viewing custom in which candidates meet the existing tenants and are chosen by them; typical costs; and the difference between social and private rental housing. It also covers the practical and legal side: what a Dutch rental contract should contain, the rights a tenant has, whether a household qualifies for rent benefit, how to register an address with the municipality, and how to recognise and report a rental scam. It advises starting a housing search three to five months before arrival. It is aimed mainly at international and Dutch students coming to the city's two higher education institutions, and at other newcomers, at the stage before they have secured housing or understood the Dutch rules.
