A newcomer arriving in Groningen can be matched one-to-one with a local resident who shares their interests, through a volunteer team based in the city.
About
Buddy to Buddy Groningen is the Groningen chapter of Stichting Buddy to Buddy Nederland, a Dutch foundation that runs local buddy chapters in more than twenty municipalities. The national foundation holds the registration and sets the method: pairing newcomers who have left their home country with local city or village residents in one-to-one matches based on equality and shared interests, an approach it describes as mutual integration happening one friend at a time. The Groningen chapter is not separately incorporated, but its activity is genuinely local. It is coordinated by a team of volunteers in the city, who recruit and place new volunteer buddies, and it can be reached directly by email and by message, separately from the national contact channels. It welcomes newcomers and refugees of all ages, including families. Alongside the core matching arrangement, the national organisation runs a parallel strand for younger participants called Buddy to Buddy Young. This is a volunteer-based social integration programme rather than a government service or a paid provider.

- Buddy to Buddy Young
A strand for younger participants, run by the national foundation.
Good to know
- It builds social contact. It does not arrange housing, permits, benefits or employment, and it is not an official integration service.
- The chapter is not separately incorporated: the registration, the method and the youth strand belong to the national foundation, while the volunteers and the matching are local.
- Matching depends on volunteers being available in Groningen, so a match is not guaranteed or immediate.
- More than twenty other Dutch municipalities have their own chapters of the same foundation, each with its own volunteers and contact route.
