It was co-initiated by the University of Groningen and the University Medical Center Groningen to support the startup ecosystem around their knowledge centres, with a stated aim of increasing the value creation and transformation of academic knowledge into profitable technology companies. It invests across three sectors aligned with the university's research strengths: life sciences, energy, and sustainable society. Alongside capital, it offers proactive management support and access to an international network, and it operates an internal seed facility with adjusted investment terms for earlier-stage companies. Its investors and partners include the European Investment Fund, the Achmea Innovaction Fund, and the two Groningen institutions that co-initiated it. Its portfolio is mostly in biotechnology, medical technology and related deep technology fields.
