About
The European Research Institute for the Biology of Ageing, known as ERIBA, is a research institute of University Medical Center Groningen. Its stated mission is to understand what causes ageing: the mechanisms by which cells are lost with age and by which old cells and tissues stop working properly, and from that to develop ways to prevent or treat age related disease. Its work separates two problems, the decline of cells that divide little after childhood, such as those in the heart and brain, and the control of self renewal and genetic stability in tissues that keep renewing. The methods it names are next generation sequencing and bioinformatics, flow cytometry, live cell imaging and genetic model systems. Group leaders set their own research agenda but are expected to collaborate inside the institute and with affiliated institutions. Training is part of the design: PhD students are recruited partly from local master's programmes and partly from institutes abroad, and the institute keeps a balance between PhD students and postdoctoral researchers so supervision remains possible. It also runs teaching for secondary school pupils and teachers and keeps a permanent exhibition on its ground floor.
