More about where our information comes from

For a researcher or founder in life sciences in the Netherlands, Forbion is a route to venture capital, and its Formation strategy backs company creation out of university and institute labs.

About

Forbion is a venture capital manager for biotechnology: it raises funds from institutional investors and puts that money into biotech companies. Its main office is in Naarden, with further offices in Munich and Boston, and it divides the work into four strategies. Ventures builds and backs companies at the pre clinical and early clinical stage. Growth provides capital to companies whose medicines are already in clinical development, mainly as private growth capital and sometimes through public market instruments. Formation covers spin outs, pre seed work and company creation, and is run as a joint venture with BioGeneration Ventures, a separate manager focused on seed and early stage companies in the Benelux and Germany. BioEconomy applies the same biotechnology knowledge outside human health, in food, agriculture, materials and environmental technologies. The firm names the European Investment Fund, the Dutch Venture Initiative and two German development banks among its own investors. It deals with companies and their founders.

What they offer

  • Venture investment in pre clinical and early clinical biotech companies
  • Growth capital for companies with medicines already in clinical development
  • Company creation and pre seed investment through a joint venture with BioGeneration Ventures
  • Investment in bio based companies in food, agriculture, materials and environmental technology

Good to know

  • A commercial fund manager. It invests selectively in return for a shareholding, and most approaches do not lead to an investment.
  • Its route in is a company. A researcher reaches it through a spin-out or an existing business, not by applying as an individual.
  • Its remit is biotechnology and bio based industry. A company outside that field is not a fit.
