About

GGD Fryslan is the health service of the Frisian municipalities, working to improve health and prevent health problems among people living in the province. Administratively it sits inside Veiligheidsregio Fryslan, the safety region that also contains the Frisian fire service and crisis management and that provides the shared support departments, and the governing documents are published by that safety region. Its own service lines are its own. It monitors and advises through youth health care, epidemiology, policy advice, medical environmental science and health promotion, and publishes what it finds in the Gezondheidsatlas Fryslan. It carries out protective duties: infectious disease control, tuberculosis care, sexual health and testing for sexually transmitted infections, youth health care, travel vaccination, and public health care for asylum seekers. It inspects childcare providers, services under the social support act and technical hygiene. It keeps public health running during disasters and crises. Its head office is in Leeuwarden and it runs more than forty child health clinics across Fryslan, with separate telephone lines per service.

Good to know

  • This is a preventive public health service. Emergency care, a family doctor and hospital treatment are provided elsewhere, and the service does not take over individual medical treatment.
  • It serves the province of Fryslan. People elsewhere in the northern Netherlands are covered by the public health service for their own region.
  • Its administrative home is Veiligheidsregio Fryslan, which also runs the fire service and crisis management. Those are separate duties of the safety region rather than health services offered here.
  • The website is published in Dutch.
