About
GGD Groningen is the gemeentelijke gezondheidsdienst, the municipal health service, for the province of Groningen. It exists as a joint arrangement between ten municipalities: Groningen, Oldambt, Midden-Groningen, Stadskanaal, Het Hogeland, Westerwolde, Veendam, Westerkwartier, Eemsdelta and Pekela. Its general board is made up of the councillors responsible for public health in those municipalities, meets in public several times a year, and elects a smaller executive board from among its members. One director of public health leads both GGD Groningen and GHOR Groningen. For residents, the service names travel vaccination and advice, testing for sexually transmitted infections, the consultation office for babies and young children, childhood vaccinations and parenting support, and it runs two chat services, one for parents of children up to twelve and one for young people aged thirteen to twenty-three. It also works with organisations rather than individuals, advising municipalities, schools, childcare providers and family doctors, and it handles vaccination for occupational groups, forensic medicine, medical environmental science, infectious disease control, and permits for tattoo, permanent make-up and piercing shops. Its main location is on Hanzeplein in the city of Groningen.
