About
Grand Theatre is an independent production house and performing arts venue in the centre of Groningen. It programmes work by visiting artists and produces its own, and says its aim is to make professional performing arts matter to people across the northern Netherlands, working with audiences, local makers, social organisations and artists from the Netherlands and abroad. It is a regular venue for northern theatre and music festivals, programmes children's theatre with SPOT during school holidays, and gives local theatre makers rehearsal and performance space along with technical support and expertise. Recurring open gatherings, which it calls clubhouses, include a monthly film club and a bimonthly queer salon, and a strand called Meet the Neighbours sets up joint projects with groups of local residents the theatre does not yet know well. The building opened in 1930 as a cinema, was squatted after the cinema went bankrupt in 1977, and was rebuilt in 1994. The organisation went bankrupt in 2015 after losing state subsidy, and the present one was set up in 2016 with support from local cultural partners and the city. It now receives structural funding from the City of Groningen and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
