If you live in the municipality of Groningen and are struggling with money or debt, this is the municipal service you are directed to, and you do not have to know which arrangement you need before you go. It also lends to people ordinary banks turn down, and it works with self-employed people as well as employees. If eviction or a cut-off of gas, water or electricity is imminent, it asks you to come to the counter directly rather than wait for an appointment.
About
The Groningse Kredietbank, usually written GKB, is the municipality of Groningen's own service for money worries and debt. Municipal regulations define it as a part of the council rather than a separate legal body, so it has no Chamber of Commerce registration and no domain of its own, and its pages sit on the municipality's website. It is nevertheless the named front door residents are sent to, and other councils use it under service agreements. It says people do not have to work out for themselves which of its services fits: an advice conversation comes first and the route is decided there. Behind that it offers help with getting an overview of your finances, income and budget management, protective administration known in Dutch as beschermingsbewind, a debt arrangement, and a loan for people who cannot get credit from an ordinary bank. A team called Eurocoach works with young people. It states that it is there for all residents and for self-employed entrepreneurs. Anyone facing eviction or a cut-off of gas, water or electricity is told to come to its counter in Groningen directly rather than wait for an appointment. Advice appointments are otherwise booked online, in separate routes for residents aged 25 and over, residents aged 18 to 24 or receiving student finance, and entrepreneurs.
