About
Healthcare for internationals, known as H4i, is a non-profit network of Dutch healthcare organisations working to close the gap between how Dutch healthcare is arranged and what patients with an international background expect. Its public face is an English-language website that explains the structure of the system, including the roles of the Ministry of Health, the healthcare authority NZa and Zorginstituut Nederland. It then works through the practical questions newcomers ask: how to find and register with a huisarts, how referrals to hospitals and specialists work, what to do outside office hours, and how to reach mental health care, pharmacies, physiotherapy, dental care and perinatal care. A separate section covers money, including the obligation to hold Dutch health insurance, what the basic package contains, the excess, supplementary cover and the healthcare benefit. Further articles deal with childbirth and young children, screening programmes, and why Dutch doctors prescribe antibiotics less readily than many newcomers expect. Members of the network in Eindhoven, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht employ English-speaking staff.
