For a parent who has moved to the Netherlands and wants a child to keep the family's language, the directory is the practical part. It lists affiliated schools by language and place, with the age range, lesson location and contact address of each.
About
Heritage Language Education Network, known as HLE Network, is a foundation recognised by the Dutch tax authority as an ANBI, a body working for the public benefit. It grew out of a network of heritage language programmes started in the Eindhoven and Brainport area in 2019. Heritage language programmes, also called mother tongue schools, are usually set up by parents from one language community so that their children keep the language and culture of the family. They are commonly run as a stichting or a vereniging, or as classes given by volunteers or freelance teachers, and most teach children between about four and twelve for twenty to forty lessons a year, most often on a Saturday. HLE Network does not teach children itself. It publishes a directory of affiliated programmes, filtered by language and place, that parents, mainstream schools and consultants use to find classes. It also brings programmes together at its cafes and a conference, publishes resources and professional practice guidelines it co-wrote, gives workshops on request, and asks government, businesses and education institutions in its region to strengthen the sector. Affiliated schools teach languages including Bulgarian, Chinese, French, German, Hungarian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish and Swedish.

Good to know
- HLE Network does not teach children itself. Classes are given by the affiliated programmes, which are separate organisations with their own arrangements.
- Most affiliated schools are in the Eindhoven area, with others in Amsterdam, The Hague, Breda, Maastricht, Helmond, Veldhoven and Groningen.
