What any resident of the area can ask for, whatever their background, is a volunteer who helps sort out letters, bills and home paperwork, or a buddy for a family with young children.
About
Humanitas Groningen is one of the local departments of Vereniging Humanitas, a volunteer association founded in 1945 that now has departments across the Netherlands and holds the CBF mark for recognised Dutch charities. The Groningen department works in the city of Groningen and in Glimmen, Haren, Harkstede, Lageland, Noordlaren, Onnen and Ten Boer. Its volunteers offer short term support so that a person can get their own situation back under control, rather than taking it over from them. Named activities include Home-Start, in which a volunteer visits a family with young children and gives practical help and company; Jonge Mantelzorgers, for people aged eight to twenty four who care for someone at home, with buddy contact, activities and a holiday week; Steunpunt Mantelzorg for adult carers; Steun en verlies for people dealing with a death; and Up! groups in which older people meet monthly to talk about one subject. The department also helps people with home administration and paperwork, and supports people affected by detention. It runs an open noticeboard for local social activities that it makes visible but does not organise. Its office is on the Akerkhof in Groningen.
