About
IN Amsterdam is the shared service desk where people arriving from abroad in the Amsterdam area complete their formalities. Its own pages describe it as a joint initiative of the municipalities of Amsterdam, Amstelveen, Almere, Diemen, Haarlem, Hilversum, Haarlemmermeer and Velsen, together with the Immigration and Naturalisation Service and the Dutch tax administration. At its office in the World Trade Center a newcomer can be entered in the municipal personal records database and receive a citizen service number, have a photograph, fingerprints and signature taken for a residence permit, and collect a residence permit or an endorsement sticker. These services are for highly skilled migrants, intra company transferees, researchers, recent graduates on an orientation year permit, startup and self employed entrepreneurs, and their direct family members. Employers based in the eight municipalities that are recognised sponsors or partners of the immigration service can begin the registration before the employee arrives, so most formalities are handled in a single visit. The desk also provides information and seminars on housing, healthcare, schooling, taxes and finding work.

Good to know
- It covers eight municipalities: Amsterdam, Amstelveen, Almere, Diemen, Haarlem, Hilversum, Haarlemmermeer and Velsen. If you are settling elsewhere you register with your own municipality.
- It serves specific permit types, chiefly highly skilled migrant, intra company transfer, research, orientation year, startup and self employed, plus direct family members. Other routes are handled by the municipality and the immigration service directly.
- It carries out the procedure; it does not decide it. The residence permit decision rests with the Immigration and Naturalisation Service.
- It is a public service rather than a relocation agent. It does not find you housing or negotiate on your behalf.
