Organisation records are published from the Flux Forward organisation register and shown here exactly as that register holds them. We do not research, write or edit them on this site, and a listing is not an endorsement or a sign that an organisation can help with your situation. Check the organisation's own website before acting.

More about where our information comes from

If you are relocating to Friesland with a primary-age child and your stay in the Netherlands is temporary or uncertain, this is an English-language option inside the Dutch government-funded school system. Ask the school about eligibility before you apply: whether your child qualifies depends on your family's nationality and plans, not only on free places.

About

International School Fryslân (ISF) is an international primary school in Leeuwarden and part of PCBO Leeuwarden e.o., a foundation that runs primary schools in and around the city. The Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science approved its establishment, as announced on 28 January 2025, and the school opened in January 2026 in the IKC Middelsee building in the south of Leeuwarden. Its site describes it as a government-funded international school: it receives partial funding from the Ministry and also charges parents a school fee. All subjects are taught in English, and pupils who arrive with little or no English receive English as an Additional Language support. Admission follows the Dutch criteria for government-funded international education. In broad terms these cover children of non-Dutch nationality whose parent works in the Netherlands temporarily or whose family does not know how long it will stay, Dutch children returning after a long period abroad who were taught in another language, and families expecting to move abroad within two years. The school accepts applications throughout the school year. Sinne Kinderopvang runs daycare and after-school care in the same building, and ISF is a member of the Dutch International Schools network.

What they offer

Good to know

  • Only children who meet the Dutch admission criteria for government-funded international education can enrol, and the school checks eligibility before an application.
  • Parents pay an annual school fee and a registration fee. The current amounts are on the school's own fees page.
  • It offers primary education only. For international secondary education its site points to International School Groningen.
  • Its pages give different age ranges, so confirm the entry age and year group with the school.
  • A place depends on availability in the year group.
