About
The Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen, in English the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, is listed in the Dutch government organisation register as a zelfstandig bestuursorgaan, an independent public body, with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science as the responsible ministry. That register sets out four tasks: advising on the practice of science, assessing the quality of scientific research through peer review, acting as a forum for the scientific world and promoting international cooperation, and serving as the umbrella organisation for scientific research institutes. Inside the academy sits the Young Academy, created in 2005, a platform of fifty researchers who took their doctorate within the previous ten years and who work on science policy, science and society, interdisciplinary research, internationalisation, and the arts, with their own working plan and their own positions. The academy publishes advisory reports, brochures and evaluation frameworks such as the Strategy Evaluation Protocol, and it holds lectures and symposia that anyone can attend. Its seat is Het Trippenhuis on Kloveniersburgwal in Amsterdam.

Good to know
- It is not a university. It enrols no students and awards no degrees, and it handles no visas, permits, university admission or job placement.
- Membership is by election. The academy announces newly elected members rather than taking applications.
- Its work on academic careers is at policy level, through advice, evaluation frameworks and the Young Academy's positions, rather than a service to job seekers.
