About
Lifelines is a research infrastructure in the north of the Netherlands, with its head office in Roden. Its stated purpose is to make scientific research into ageing in good health possible. Around 167,000 people from the northern Dutch population take part across several generations, filling in questionnaires and attending a research round roughly every five years, and they receive their own health results back. The biobank holds body materials from participants, including blood, urine and hair. Lifelines does not carry out the studies itself. It collects, manages and shares the material: researchers apply for access to the data and samples, and policymakers can use the dataset to prepare, monitor and evaluate local, regional and national health policy. Extra questions or measurements can be added through add-on studies, and Lifelines data can be linked to outside sources such as CBS or the municipal health services. Organisations without their own research capacity are referred to intermediary bodies that can do the analysis. Lifelines is not run for profit and is financed by grants.

Good to know
- Access to the data and the samples is by application and is subject to Lifelines' review, privacy and data-use conditions.
- Lifelines does not carry out studies itself. Organisations without their own research capacity are referred to intermediary bodies that can do the analysis.
- The Roden address is the administrative office. Participants are seen at separate research locations.
