About
The NATO Innovation Fund, or NIF, is a standalone venture capital fund whose money comes from 24 sovereign states of the NATO alliance. It is not part of NATO itself: the fund states that the NATO organisation has invested nothing in it and takes no part in its decisions, that its staff are not NATO employees, and that NATO created the fund under its NATO 2030 initiative. It invests in science and engineering companies whose technology can strengthen defence, security and resilience, across nine areas: materials and manufacturing, energy, space, artificial intelligence, autonomy, quantum, biotechnology, hypersonic systems and next-generation communications. First cheques run from seed to Series B and go up to 15 million euros, and the fund prefers to lead a round, take a board seat and hold reserves for later rounds. It also invests in other venture funds through a fund of funds programme, and says it can open doors to government customers in allied countries. Its headquarters is in the Netherlands, its offices are in Amsterdam, London and Warsaw, and the fund vehicle is domiciled in Luxembourg.
