NLC Health Ventures, which shortens its name to NLC, builds healthcare technology companies and invests in them. It was founded in 2015. Rather than waiting for founders to approach it, it looks for scientific inventions coming out of universities, academic hospitals and corporate research in Europe and North America, assesses them, and builds a new venture around those it picks, with a team and capital attached. It says its aim is to close the gap between a discovery and a product that reaches patients, pointing out that most medical inventions never do. Its stated method is to run this at scale: it builds a set number of ventures each year and shares knowledge, experts and resources across the portfolio, so that the head of one venture can draw on peers working on similar problems. It raises money through captive funds, which it says open early-stage healthcare investment to retail as well as institutional investors, and it publishes an impact and ESG policy. Its subject areas are cardiovascular and image-guided therapy, orthopedics and spine, therapeutics from small molecules to gene therapy, and a general group covering neonatal and respiratory technology and software for hospitals.
