Organisation records are published from the Flux Forward organisation register and shown here exactly as that register holds them. More about where our information comes from

It is one of the few outlets reporting on Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe in English, so local politics, housing and university news are readable without Dutch.

About

The Northern Times publishes news about the north of the Netherlands in English. Its category menu is built around Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe, with national items added when they affect the north. The reporting is broad: provincial and municipal politics, crime, health, the regional economy, culture and music including Eurosonic Noorderslag, food, nightlife and an events agenda. Much of its education coverage follows the University of Groningen, from budget decisions and staffing to the shortage of student rooms and the introduction weeks for arriving students. Separate categories headed Expats and International carry items such as a meet-up for accompanying partners, English-language courses at a local arts centre and a seminar on finding work while studying, and a strand called Make it in the North reports on campaigns connecting international workers with employers in the region. Some articles are credited to GIC and others to named contributors, and the site invites readers to send in an article or a news tip.

What they offer

  • English-language news reporting on Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe
  • Events agenda for the northern provinces
  • Reader article submissions and news tips

Good to know

  • An independent media outlet, not an official government source.
  • It publishes no About page, masthead or editorial statement, so the company or foundation behind the title cannot be established from the site itself.
  • The page at its /contact/ address is unedited demo content shipped with the site's theme, carrying an unrelated business's details, so it is not a usable route to the newsroom.
