If you are a researcher at a Dutch university or institute, this is where most competitive research money comes from, and its personal grants can fund your own position as well as the project.
About
NWO is the Dutch Research Council. Its own governance page describes it as an independent directive body with a legally established mission, falling under the responsibility of the education ministry. Most public money for research goes straight from that ministry to universities; NWO handles the part awarded by competition instead, using money from the education ministry and from almost every other ministry, with businesses and civil society organisations co-funding themed programmes. Proposals are selected on the advice of expert reviewers in the Netherlands and abroad, and what NWO pays for is the personnel and material costs of research and of knowledge exchange. The work runs through three domains, covering science, social sciences and humanities, and applied and engineering sciences, alongside thematic programmes. Standing funding lines include a talent programme whose grants back individual researchers at three career stages, a scheme for people who have just completed a doctorate, and open competitions within each domain. NWO also funds large research facilities, joins international calls with partner agencies, and stands above ten national research institutes.

Good to know
- It funds research through open competition. Applications normally run through a Dutch university or institute rather than from an individual with no host.
- It awards money; it does not employ researchers. Your contract is with the institution that hosts the grant.
- It is a research funder and has nothing to do with residence permits, housing or the recognition of foreign qualifications.
