About
NWO-I is the institutes organisation of the Dutch Research Council. Its own about page describes it as an independent foundation that forms part of NWO, and the distinction matters: NWO is the research funding council, while NWO-I is the body responsible for ten national research institutes and the people who work in them. Its foundation board carries out the day-to-day management of those institutes and appoints their directors. The ten are AMOLF, ARCNL, ASTRON, CWI, DIFFER, HFML-FELIX, Nikhef, NIOZ, NSCR and SRON, together with a support office in Utrecht, and they sit in Amsterdam, Dwingeloo, Eindhoven, Nijmegen, Texel, Yerseke, Leiden and Groningen. Their subjects run from the physics of complex matter, nanolithography and radio astronomy to mathematics and computer science, fundamental energy research, high magnetic fields, subatomic physics, sea research, the study of crime and law enforcement, and space research. NWO-I publishes its statutes, internal regulations and annual reports, runs a Recognition and Rewards programme, advertises vacancies across the institutes and its office, and is a party to the Collective Labour Agreement for Research Institutions.

- NWO-I employs and manages; it does not fund research. Grant calls and funding decisions are made by the Dutch Research Council, which is a separate body.
- Its remit is the ten institutes and its own office. Positions at Dutch universities are advertised and governed elsewhere, under a different collective labour agreement.
- Nothing it publishes covers visas, relocation or tax arrangements for incoming staff; those are handled by the employing institute or by the national authorities.
