The province publishes its website in Dutch and in Frisian and uses the Frisian form Provinsje Fryslân next to the Dutch one, which tells a newcomer that Frisian is in everyday official use in this region. Its own English-language material is limited to a translated privacy statement.
About
The Province of Fryslân is one of the twelve Dutch provinces and the layer of government between the national government and the Frisian municipalities. Its provincial house is at Tweebaksmarkt 52 in Leeuwarden. It is governed by an elected assembly, the Provinciale Staten, an executive, the Gedeputeerde Staten, and the King's Commissioner. Anyone who disagrees with a written decision by one of them, or with the way they were treated, can lodge an objection or a complaint. Provincial spatial policy is set out in a Provincial Omgevingsvisie, which describes how the province wants to deal with space in Fryslân up to 2050 and makes choices between the housing shortage, the energy transition, nitrogen and a changing climate. The province grants subsidies to Frisian home owners and businesses, and it takes reports of environmental nuisance such as water and soil pollution, fish deaths, oil spills, factory odour and noise, together with reports about the public space such as broken traffic lights, grass mowing and ice control.
