About
Regio Groningen-Assen, usually shortened to RGA, is an administrative partnership between the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe and the municipalities of Assen, Groningen, Het Hogeland, Midden-Groningen, Noordenveld, Tynaarlo and Westerkwartier. Its own site calls the cooperation voluntary: the participating municipalities and provinces keep their own powers and set the direction together, on the basis of frameworks adopted by their own councils and provincial parliaments. The partnership has existed since 1996 and concentrates on three themes, housing, mobility and the economy, together with the spatial quality of the towns and villages that connect them. Day to day work is done by a Regiobureau whose staff are not employed by the partnership itself but are made available by a participating municipality or province. The bureau follows developments in the housing market, business parks, mobility and spatial quality, publishes a Regiomonitor dashboard, and prepares the meetings of the steering group.

Good to know
- A cooperation body. Formal decisions remain with the participating governments and the competent authorities.
- Its participants are two provinces and seven municipalities around the cities of Groningen and Assen, not the northern Netherlands as a whole.
- It deals with governments and regional partners rather than with individual residents.
