More about where our information comes from

Useful if you are building a company on University of Groningen research and are looking for an early-stage investor who also brings scientific knowledge, mentoring and a network. Because it invests in ideas that stem from the university, it is not a general funding route, and every proposal is assessed before an investment decision.

About

RUG Ventures is the early-stage investment company of the University of Groningen. Its own site describes it as a subsidiary of the university, which holds 100% of its shares, and says it was founded in 1996 under the name RUG Houdstermaatschappij. It invests in ideas stemming from the University of Groningen and works with the researchers and founders turning research-driven concepts into companies, across life science and health, agri-food, IT and digital, chemistry and energy, water, and high tech systems and materials. It offers two investment forms: an equity investment, where it acquires shares in the company, and a convertible loan, which can be converted into equity at a later stage. Which of the two fits is decided together with the founders. Alongside the money it offers scientific and technical knowledge, experienced mentors, industry experts and advisers, and access to its network. The university presents RUG Ventures as one part of a wider knowledge-transfer chain in which Business Generator Groningen supports business development and the licensing of intellectual property, and Innokite is the incubator for knowledge-intensive startups in the Northern Netherlands. Those are separate organisations with separate offers.

What they offer

Good to know

  • It invests in ideas that stem from the University of Groningen. It is not a general funding route for a business with no connection to the university research base.
  • Investment is not guaranteed. RUG Ventures assesses an idea before it decides, and a university connection does not by itself qualify a venture.
  • It is an investor. Business development and the licensing of university intellectual property sit with Business Generator Groningen, and incubation with Innokite. Both are separate organisations.
