For somebody arriving after fleeing their country, including through the Dutch resettlement scheme, the concrete offer is a local group giving contact, everyday help and access to social and professional networks during the first period in a new town.
About
Samen Hier is an initiative of a Dutch human rights organisation based in The Hague that has worked on human rights and social justice since 1968. It applies the community sponsorship model in the Netherlands. Under that model a group of residents takes joint responsibility for welcoming a person or family who has fled, so that a newcomer arrives into an existing set of local relationships rather than only into an administrative process. The operator states that the approach grew out of two earlier projects that ran festivals and network meetings between 2016 and 2020, and that the first Dutch version of community sponsorship began in 2019 with 300 participants in The Hague, Rotterdam, Almere and Haarlem. The operator coordinates the community in The Hague itself, while in other cities partner organisations coordinate the local groups and their activities, so each municipality can shape how it welcomes newcomers. An impact report on the pilot with community sponsorship for resettled refugees was published in June 2022. Its published partner list includes the municipalities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Nijmegen and Zwolle, several Dutch universities, and a European migration fund.
