Its membership conditions are the thing to check first: registration with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce, at least a year of operation, at least one full-time equivalent employed, and at least half of income earned from the market rather than from gifts or subsidies.
About
Social Enterprise NL is the national network for social enterprises in the Netherlands: companies whose primary aim is to create social or environmental value rather than shareholder returns. It was founded in 2012 and is a stichting with a supervisory board, funded mainly by its members, by founding partners and by commissioned work. Its published definition of a social enterprise has five parts: impact comes first, financial profit is a means and not an aim, the impact is made as an independent company selling a product or service, the business is transparent and fair, and governance gives balanced say to those involved. It groups its own work into four priorities: growing the member community, strengthening the influence of social entrepreneurs in policy, improving the finance, regulation and education around them, and bringing the wider business community in as a partner. It also offers a self-test for enterprises unsure whether they qualify.

Good to know
- A member foundation and network, not a government regulator.
- Membership is paid, in three bands set by the previous year's turnover.
