About
SPIC Emmen stands for Sustainable Polymer Innovation Cluster. It is a cluster of companies and knowledge institutions based around Emmen in Drenthe that make their polymer equipment, laboratories and expertise available to outside parties, so that plastics made from biobased raw materials or from recycled material can be developed and then produced in larger volumes. The equipment stays owned by the individual partners, who take the view that sharing it speeds up development and keeps costly machinery in use. The technologies offered cover polymerisation, post condensation, compounding, yarn and monofilament spinning and drawing, and 3D printing. Each is available at three scales: laboratory quantities of around a kilogram, pilot plant runs, and full production lines. A polymer laboratory adds filament, mechanical, thermal and rheological analysis and microscopy. Coordination and communication for the cluster sit with one member company, which is also carrying out an investment programme in shared research equipment funded by a partner company, the European Commission, the Dutch government, the Province of Drenthe and the City of Emmen. Its named partners include the University of Groningen, two colleges and several plastics manufacturers.
