Leergeld Groningen, registered as Stichting Leergeld Groningen e.o., helps families with little money to spare cover the cost of a child taking part at school and outside it. It is part of Leergeld Nederland, the national association whose members are the local Leergeld foundations, and it holds its own registration, its own working area and its own application route, separate from the other local foundations in the association. It works for children from birth to the age of seventeen who live in the municipality of Groningen, which it defines as the city plus the surrounding villages and hamlets. The parent applies through an online form, the foundation aims to make contact within fourteen days, and an intermediary then visits the family at home to go through the request. What it can pay for includes gym kit, swimming lessons and swimwear, membership plus clothing and equipment for a sports or culture club, a bicycle, a smartphone, a birthday box, holiday camp activities, school supplies at the end of primary school, a laptop or graphing calculator for the upper secondary years, and study materials for vocational education. It runs on volunteers with an unpaid board.

- Support is given in kind: the foundation pays for the item, the lessons or the membership rather than making a cash payment to the household.
- It covers children up to the age of seventeen living in the municipality of Groningen. Families elsewhere apply to the Leergeld foundation for their own area, which is a separate entity with its own route.
- An application is followed by a home visit from an intermediary before it is decided, so it is not an automatic entitlement.
