Someone who has recently moved to Groningen and does not speak Dutch can still join a weekly class or workshop, because most music and visual art courses run in English and the centre publishes a separate English page for them.
About
Tumult is a foundation that calls itself the house of amateur art for Groningen. It was formed in 2014 by a merger of the municipal music school, the Prinsentheater and Kunstencentrum Groningen, worked under the name VRIJDAG from then on, and took the name Tumult in September 2026, which is worth knowing because older references and partner listings still use the former name. It receives structural subsidy from the municipality and the province of Groningen and belongs to two sector bodies. Its building on the Sint Jansstraat in the city centre holds teaching rooms, a theatre hall and a concert hall. It sells courses, classes and workshops in music, drama, and visual and applied arts including ceramics, printmaking, screen printing, goldsmithing, photography and painting, grouped by age from young children through to adults and taught by professional artists, musicians and makers. Most music and visual art courses can be followed in Dutch or in English and some in German, and a small number of drama courses are given in English. Full time higher education students pay ten percent less. Rooms can be hired for meetings, rehearsals, performances and concerts, and study, rehearsal and drum rooms and musical instruments are booked through reception.
