About
The University Medical Center Groningen is the university hospital for the northern Netherlands and the only one in that part of the country. Its own pages set out three core tasks. The first is care: it takes patients who need complicated investigations or treatments, who have a rare disease, or who have more than one condition, and it says that for some very complex treatments it is the only hospital in the Netherlands that provides them. It is deliberately handing routine care to other hospitals in the region to make room for these patients, and it works with general practitioners, midwives and home care services. The second is education: it trains students to become doctors, dentists and human movement scientists, trains doctors to become medical specialists in every specialism, and runs care programmes at higher professional and vocational level, with the bachelor in Medicine also taught in English. The third is research, on new techniques, treatments, medicines and forms of care, with a focus on healthy and active ageing, carried out in close cooperation with the University of Groningen. Its main site is on the Hanzeplein in Groningen, with a second location in Haren.
What they offer
- Degree teaching for doctors, dentists and human movement scientists, including a bachelor in Medicine taught in English
- Specialist training for doctors and care programmes at higher professional and vocational level
- Medical research focused on healthy and active ageing, with the University of Groningen
Good to know
- It takes complex cases and is handing routine care to other hospitals in the region, so a general practitioner referral decides whether it is the right hospital.
- Its site publishes no general email address: contact runs through a form or the telephone line.
- It is a hospital and a teaching and research institution. It handles nothing to do with permits, registration or housing.
