For an international family in the Eindhoven area it means the local library, school and childcare location may hold books in the family's own language, that the staff there are trained to use them, and that parents are given advice on keeping the home language strong alongside Dutch.
About
Van Alle Talen Thuis is an impulse programme for children up to the age of twelve in the Brainport region around Eindhoven. Its starting point is that a child's home language is the route to language development, and that a firm grip on it makes Dutch easier. The programme adds multilingual book collections, put together for each participating organisation, to the collections already held by primary schools, childcare locations and public libraries in the region, and the libraries taking part carry books in dozens of home languages. Alongside the books it trains the adults: teachers, childcare staff, reading coordinators and library media coaches follow work sessions, e-learning and consultations, and then stay in a learning network afterwards. Parents are given advice on supporting the home language at home. It is a fixed term programme rather than an organisation: a chip manufacturer pays for it, and it is delivered by a partnership of regional public libraries with two colleges, a heritage language body and the regional authority. A research partner and an independent researcher measure what it achieves over its three year run.
