About
Voedselbank Leeuwarden hands out free groceries to households in the municipality of Leeuwarden that cannot afford enough food. It was started in 2005 by the Council of Churches in Leeuwarden and it is part of Voedselbanken Nederland, the national organisation of Dutch food banks, which sets the shared framework the local banks work within. Its own working area, locations and distribution arrangements are its own. It works with churches and other organisations in the region, whose staff meet people who need help and refer them, and an application can also be made through the food bank's own site; the form asks for contact details, date of birth, income, household composition and expenses. Each client is given one fixed day and time each week. At the Tylkedam location in Leeuwarden people choose their own products from what is available that week, an arrangement introduced in September 2025, while at the Grou location a prepared food parcel is given out instead. The organisation also accepts donations, recruits volunteers and runs supermarket collection campaigns.
