About
Wetsus is a not-for-profit foundation in Leeuwarden that organises research into sustainable water technology. It describes itself as a facilitating intermediary: the private and public water sector defines the research programme, and universities carry it out through interdisciplinary doctoral projects. Companies pay an annual contribution and commit for the long term, and the programme is demand driven, so the research is meant to be both scientifically sound and useful in practice. Wetsus started in 2003, and in 2022 the Dutch government appointed it a national institute for strategically important research. The foundation is part of the WaterCampus site in Leeuwarden, the shared location for the Dutch water technology sector, where research facilities are shared and companies, knowledge institutions and governments meet. Its partner network reaches around the world with the weight of it in the European Union. Alongside the research programme it runs a schools and talent programme with laboratory days, an honours year of research, coaching for school research projects, loan sets of water experiments and a junior water prize.
